Energy and Conversation

A good first date recipe has these two main ingredients: 1) an opportunity to talk and 2) some energy and excitement.
Try to get at least these two into your first date.

Here are some of the best generic ideas we think will help you, regardless of where you're located:

Go for a walk

Find a nice place to simply walk and talk. Think well about the place though, since the scenery can help pick up the conversation if it starts flattening. If you both have pets, even better. Taking them for a walk will make it easier to start a conversation and make it last.

Explore a flea market

This is an easy place to find plenty to look at and talk about. It also gives you an idea of the other person's style and preferences.

Organize a picnic

This simple alternative to a classic restaurant date will show that you can think outside the box. Plan for an evening date and suggest to go shopping together for the picnic during the day. Doing these two - active then relaxing - activities will leave plenty of memories.

Take a class together

Something like a cooking or painting class would be a fun activity for both, while allowing for quick conversations in-between. Check your local stores - they might even offer date night classes, tailored for this occasion.

Arcade

Challenging each other in different games will definitely have your personalities come out. This is a guaranteed fun date, even if you’re not into video games. There’s always something for everyone. Some “bar-cade” places even allow for BYOB, but make sure to decide together on what you’d prefer to share during the games.

Museum, Aquarium, Zoo, or Art Gallery

All of these are good places where you can chat and stroll at your pace, while definitely having something to point at and talk about. Try not to bring your opinion too hard towards the things you see. Consider listening to the other person's point of view.

Hiking

If you’re both into the outdoors and adventures, this might be a good alternative to the above-mentioned walk and talk date. Make sure this is a day hike and bring plenty of water for both of you.

Rock climbing

Doing a physically vigorous activity will make you seem more attractive to your date (and vice versa).

Shopping

This does not have to be centered around buying something for the other person. Make this about looking for a gift for someone else (like a family member or friend). Opinions, style, and sense for expenses will come into play here and will give you insight into the other person’s views. This date is good for those looking for a long-term relationship.

Bowling

The goal here is to have fun and not be competitive. Even if you're not good at it, bowling will be an opportunity to laugh at each other and have plenty of room for conversations.

Winery/Brewery

Most cities today have lots of breweries and even wineries. Take advantage of that to do some tastings and have conversations at the same time. This is a better alternative to the classic bar date and gets a more positive response.

Dinner date

The classic date. If none of the above fit your scenario, you can always revert to the OG of dates. If you do so, make sure to pick a cool spot that would easily be a part of your initial conversation.

Bar/drinks date

If you choose this other classic one, make sure to make it more unique by finding a rooftop or brand new bar - it shows that you’re making an effort. Mention the actual place in your date idea.
